Adam Anderson (1692 or 1693-1765)
Adam Anderson was a Scottish economist. He published a scientific study of the “Historical and Chronological Deduction of the Origin of Commerce” in 1765, written from his experience as one of the trustees who established the colony of Georgia under the charter granted to General Oglethorpe in 1732.
James Anderson (1739-1808)
James Anderson FRSE FSAScot was an agriculturist and political economist. He wrote his “Account of the Present State of The Hebrides and Western Coasts of Scotland” in 1785, in addition to an entry – ‘Monsoon’ – for the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1773 that accurately predicted discoveries to be made by Captain Cook before his return.
John Anderson (1726 – 1796)
John Anderson FRSE FRS FSA(Scot) was a professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University. The stature of his academic work is testified to by the fact that his “Institutes of Physics” went through five editions in his lifetime. He continued the connection with France that his ancestor Alexander had started in the seventeenth century, by inventing a method of diminishing the recoil in a gun that was gratefully received by the French National Convention in 1791.
William Anderson (1805-1866)
Produced the famous biographical history of the people of Scotland, “The Scottish Nation”, in three volumes in 1863.
John Anderson (1882 – 1958)
Born in Edinburgh, he was the outstanding Governor of Bengal during the critical years (1932-37) of India’s secession from the Empire. The last British statesman to hold a parliamentary status as an independent, Viscount Waverly attained cabinet office under Churchill, in addition to designing the Anderson bomb shelter.
Clan Anderson Places
The lands and lairdship of Candacraig, in Aberdeenshire, were granted to Andersons in 1620, and it remained in the family for 246 years, until 1866.
