Registration notes: Designed in early 1984 by Col. William Bell, then President of Clan Bell Descendants. Bob Martin, a nationally known kilt maker, further reworked the design and put it into thread count. The design was unanimously approved during the 1984 Bell gathering in Staunton, Virginia. The design and thread count were then forwarded, with the required fee, to the Scottish Tartans Authority. Their return letter of approval stated the tartan was an “Original Design”. Named Bell of the Borders, and nicknamed “Dress Blue”, Col. Bell purchased two runs whose yardage was made into kilts, sashes, scarves, table coverings and flags. The tartan was held privately by Col. Bell for several years and then released for public manufacture and sales.
