The Crawford tartan is another from the Vestairium Scoticum. Crawford being a border clan/family would never have had a tartan before this. However, the original coloured plate has the colour as scarlet red rather than the wine shade we know today.
The term 'ancient' refers to dye shades, normally lighter, whereas 'modern' refers to darker colours.
