The four quarters of the arms (the shield in the centre) represent, clockwise from left, the Calder, Campbell, Lorne and Lort ancestors. Mottoes: (over crest) Candidus cantabit moriens (‘The pure heart shall sing when dying’); (under the arms) ‘Be mindful’. Creations: Barony (GB) 21 June 1796. Earl and Viscount (UK) 5 Oct 1827.
