Clan Kerr People
Lord Mark Kerr (c1745)Son of the first Marquess of Lothian, the Lord Justice General of Scotland, Lord Kerr became known as a soldier of distinction. He is described as having both a hasty temper and an elevated sense of personal reverence which together led him into many duels.
These he obviously won, living to achieve the rank of general and, in 1745, become governor of Edinburgh Castle.
William Paton Ker
William Paton Ker (1855-1923)
After studying at Glasgow University in his hometown, W P Ker moved to study at Oxford, where he became a fellow of All Souls.
In 1879 he returned north to become assistant in Latin at Edinburgh University, then went to Cardiff in 1883 as Professor of English Literature and History. From 1889 he taught at London before returning to Oxford in 1920 as Professor of Poetry.
His body of work includes Epic and Romance, 1896, The Dark Ages, 1904, Medievil English Literature, 1912 and The Art of Poetry, 1923. He died whilst hill-climbing and a W P Ker Memorial Lecture is held in Glasgow University in his honour.
Deborah Kerr (30 September 1921 – 16 October 2007)
Actress Deborah Kerr was born in Glasgow in 1921, and spent the first few years of her life in nearby Helensburgh. Kerr started acting in theatre before moving onto film, starring in movies such as The King & I, From Here to Eternity, The Innocents, Black Narcissus, and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
